Why most people don't get results (don't be most people)

Yesterday I laid on the couch for 3 hours and 2 of those I was napping.

It took me a minute to realize it, but Wednesdays are like that for me.

A typical start to my week looks like this:

Monday: Wake up at 5am and hit the trail by 6am for a 6 mile run.

Tuesday: I'm up at 5:15 for a fun (but grindy) workout at the gym.

Wednesday: I’m up at 5:15 because I workout before coaching the morning classes at my CrossFit gym.

(Mind you, this is all before a full work day and my parenting responsibilities. IYKYK what's involved in being a working parent.)

Summer is my jam which means, I need to be careful because I will live my whole life out in this short 3 month window 😆.

It’s amazingly freeing to have mornings where I don’t have to drive my kids to school or pick them up and it literally adds hours to my week.

It took me a minute to realize it, but every Wednesday afternoon like clockwork I need some downtime. I’ll block out my schedule to work on low cognitive admin type of tasks knowing this wont produce my best work.

But yesterday as it turns out, was a full restoration day and instead of fighting it (like my former self would have done), I listened.

Srsly, what’s the point of all this lived experience wisdom if you’re not actually using it?

Below is a snapshot of what my training has been like over the last few weeks.

I LOVE a physical goal. I love the pursuit, the excitement, the highs, the lows, the pain, the exhilaration, the frustration, the joy, I even love the boring parts that nobody sees.

I love that I demonstrate a high level of commitment to myself and I love that I do what I say I'm going to do.

You’ll never hear me complain about waking up at 5am or going to bed by 10.

(here is a snapshot of my training plan for my two trail races coming up at the end of August - I LOVE a spreadsheet and I love a plan so taking the time to build these are as enjoyable as achieving the goal itself 🤓).

Having a plan is a VITAL part of any process and goal.

I need a plan because sometimes I need to pull myself back when I’m feeling good and think I should do more (to prevent burnout).

I need a plan to make sure I’m maintaining my strength and continuing to lift weights and have fun in the gym and not just hyperfocusing on running.

I need a plan to remind me of the goals I've laid out before me.

But most of all being a busy working mom to two teenage girls and a lot of balls in the air at any given time - I need a plan so it's easier to hold (and demonstrate to them!) boundaries around my health and goals.

And having a plan helps with all that.

You can be fully committed to your goals and also shift and remain flexible as life comes at you.

(Like when you just need to lay on the couch watching Modern Family reruns with your teenagers for a few hours - TIME WELL SPENT, btw).

In fact, it's not reasonable to expect everything to go according to plan every day.

This is no different than what I do with the women I work with.

We run the tests, we get real answers, and we build a plan around what your body is actually telling us.

But the plan is only half of it. The other half is having someone in your corner when life comes at you, so that instead of abandoning the whole thing, you simply pivot and keep going.

Because it's not a matter of IF you hit resistance. It's WHEN.

And that's the moment most people quit. It's also the exact moment a plan and a guide matter most.

It's why most people don't get results in the areas they most want to change. They give up at the slightest hint of resistance instead of normalizing and recognizing it’s always going to be a part of the process.

You can feel resistance and keep going anyway. In fact, you must.

Don't be like most people 😉 . Resistance isn't a sign you're failing, it's the sign you're doing it.

XO,
Kristen

P.S. When's the last time you felt the resistance and did the thing anyway? I’m not talking about the start of something (when it was easy), but the day it wasn't. The messy middle kind of stuff that comes up. Hit reply and share with me!

Ok, first pretend I wrote this yesterday 🙈. It's my June favorites but we're still going for it. This is the real life, present over perfect kind of vibes, because in the health and wellness world it's never too late. Here's what I've been up to that explains the lateness factor 👇 I'm coming to you from the home stretch of something I've been quietly working on for the last several months: my Health Mindset Coaching Certification. It's advanced training in the behavior change science behind...

I made a decision on something a few days ago and I'm excited to share it with you. This is what I refer to as a PRIMAL YES. You know that kind of yes I’m talking about? The kind that you feel in your body and the excitement just grows out of you until you have no choice but to take action. That’s me right now. I signed up for a half marathon. Not just any old half marathon, I signed up for a trail half marathon. (one in an EPIC location might I add) I’ve done a bazillion road races (ok,...

May was my birthday month, which means it's automatically one of my favorite months of the year 🥳. I particularly love Taurus season because it’s the one time of year I get to lean fully into my natural state of self-indulgence and call it an astrological personality trait. 😆 Here are a few of my favorites from May… 📖 Book: Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid I devoured this one. Big historical fiction fan here, and this was no exception. Atmosphere follows one of the first women training to be...
