May is my birthday month and this is my last year in my 40’s. And I’m thrilled. I actually love celebrating my birthday and I make sure people know it’s coming. Not because I expect anything, but I’m a quality time love language person which means the little mini celebrations of having moments in shared conversation with the people I like to spend time with is the gift. If you’re a quality time person then you know exactly what I’m talking about. Am I supposed to dread turning 50, because I don’t. I’m genuinely embracing it all. Aging is such a gift and I’ll be damned if someone tries to tell me I shouldn’t celebrate the hell out myself. I'll be 49 in a couple of weeks, and you know what? I feel better right now than I ever have. Sure it would be nice to have a little more money in the bank, a little less stress in my life, or a little more time to travel and have fun - but truth be told, I’m in the best shape of my life and I’m the most resilient emotionally I’ve ever been. This is not because life got easier (trust me, it didn't). My life looks absolutely nothing like I thought it would at this age. But I am raising two incredibly smart, wildly cool daughters, I’m living out my purpose every single day, and I feel more alive in this body than I have in years - maybe ever. And y’all, that didn't happen by accident. This is living FULL OUT. This is what it looks like to prioritize yourself. To hold yourself accountable. To have high expectations for yourself while also working on giving yourself heaps of grace because this sort of living isn’t for the weak. It’s full of failure and heartache. But there’s no other option for me. That said, to celebrate my birthday this month, I'm going deeper in on myself. Because that's what I do. Because I’m my best investment every time. Here's what I'm doing for my birthday month: 🔬DUTCH Hormone test — This test is GOLD. I run it on myself every 6 months to ensure the hormones I’m taking (bioidentical estrogen and progesterone) are still being dosed appropriately and metabolized healthily. Clear answers beats guessing every time. If you’ve never heard of the DUTCH Test it’s a simple urine test you do at home, and what comes back is a complete picture of your estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol, including how your body is metabolizing all of it. That last part is what your regular bloodwork skips. And that last part is everything! 📊 DEXA scan — I’ve never done one before, but for $60, this was a no-brainer. This will give me information on my body composition, bone density, and muscle mass. These are some pretty important numbers that actually matter at this stage, and most women have never seen them. I want to be living life to the absolute fullest as long as possible. I won't be limited by frailty and that is a choice, my friends. 🎨 Getting my colors done — I’ve also made an appointment with a color specialist (is that what they’re called?) to see what my colors are. Am I a summer or autumn? Or maybe a spring? I’m about to find out! Because yes, I want to know what looks best on me but can you imagine the decision fatigue that will be resolved when I KNOW what colors highlight my features and skin. Self-investment is not just clinical. It's also just... fun. I’m all about working-smarter-not-harder and all three of these fit that bill. If you also want to work smarter, and not harder I invite you to start with gatherine the data. You can eat clean, workout hard, experiment with a bazillion expensive supplements, and still feel like you're fighting your own body. I know because I've watched it happen over and over again. And it's not because those women weren't trying, but because they were making decisions without the full picture. What if a couple of strategic tests changed everything? What if you finally stopped guessing and started knowing? That's what I do with my clients. We run the right labs, read them together, and build a protocol that's actually built for YOUR body (not a generic protocol built for someone else's). If you've been waiting for a sign to finally invest in yourself the way you invest in everyone else, this is it. Reply to this email with the word LABS and I'll send you the details on how we can work together. You're too smart to keep working this hard with this little information. XO, P.S. You only get one body. Let's figure out what it actually needs. |
It's the last day of March and I'm doing my monthly thing where I share what's been on rotation in my world. The stuff I actually found useful or interesting this month. Let's get into it. 🎥 Watch: 5 Minute Stretch Routine That I'm Loving I wish I had a job where I moved around more. A few hours a week I coach CrossFit classes, which I love because I'm constantly moving, demoing, stretching, lifting, walking. But that's only a few hours a week. My day job here at Epic Health headquarters has...
She was only 38, but she felt decades older.“I’m falling apart,” she told me. “My stomach hurts so badly sometimes I end up doubled over. My moods swing like a pendulum, and my skin is embarrassing."She confessed she doesn't enjoy food anymore because meals were just one big stressful event. Either she skips eating altogether or she has to eat such tiny meals she ends up eating constantly. What a blood sugar roller coaster! She stopped enjoying food or even wearing jeans comfortably. She had...
How is it already time to write my June Favorites email?! Summer solstice just passed, and somehow we’re halfway through the year 🤯. Here’s the CliffsNotes version of what’s been going on in my life: I’m fully in my “teen mom era,” and honestly, every stage with my kids just gets better. But wow, June is WILD for moms. [Pro tip: if you ever need something from a mom in June, September, or December... maybe just don’t. Unless you're taking something off her plate first. 😉] Mid-June hit hard:...
